Event Description
Freedom of religion is a fundamental human right that protects the conscience of all people. It allows us to think, express and act upon what we deeply believe.  One of the most important goals of The Central Florida Commission on Religious Freedom is to increase awareness and to facilitate respectful, thoughtful, candid conversation between people of diverse beliefs concerning the nature, role and importance of religious freedom in our community. The 2019 Orlando Summit on Religious Freedom provides an opportunity for instruction from and dialog with a nationally recognized expert in the area of religious freedom.  This year our keynote speaker will be Rabbi David Saperstein.  Designated by the Washington Post as the “quintessential religious lobbyist on Capitol Hill,” David Saperstein, for decades, directed the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. During two years (2015-2017), Rabbi Saperstein also served our nation as the U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, carrying out his responsibilities as the country’s chief diplomat on religious freedom issues.  As an attorney, he taught seminars on Church–State law and Jewish Law for 35 years at Georgetown University Law Center. Rabbi Saperstein's topic will be "Religious Freedom in the United States and Across the Globe: Navigating Dangerous Challenges”. Also featured at this event: Civil Discourse: Barbara Beck of "The Good Life 45" discusses how a Christian and an atheist find common ground. A conversation with Pastor Danny de Armas and David Williamson.
